What is LEAD?

The LEAD Program allows students to Learn, Experiment, Advance and Demonstrate different approaches to their learning beyond the regular school year.  This is a project based learning program that utilizes educational technology (iPads, videos, blogs, etc) and engages students in experience-based study.  Students will go on field trips, engage in hands-on learning, and participate in activities focused on teamwork, social responsibility, and increasing self-esteem, confidence, creativity, self-sufficiency, and leadership.  It is an alternative to traditional summer school, for students who have struggled with their learning or need an alliterate approach to boosting their understanding and developing skills in the areas of Science, Math, English and Socials.

The Program

Sullivan Heights will be developing their program about their "educational passions."  Mrs. Becker, Mr. Dewinetz and the students of the LEAD program will have the opportunity to explore their passion for learning.  Students have an opportunity to purse their area of interests as teachers guide their daily lessons through the four core curricular subject areas of English/Socials or Math/Science*.  Grade 11 and 12 Peer Tutors will be present to mentor the Grade 8 and 9 students by helping facilitate the learning environment.
* while these are the most common arrangements of courses, we are flexible to accept students who have struggled in other combinations of the core 4 courses

Assessment and Timing

Student work is displayed during a culmination showcase presentation; parents and community members are invited to experience individual student projects.  Successful Grade 8 & 9 students will receive a grade of up to a B for the courses that they are registered in.  Final assessment is structured around teacher-created rubrics, allowing for reflection and aligning with the new learning standards.

When & Where?

All students complete 80 hours of instruction, 8:30 - 12:30 each day (with the exception of field trip days, which may run slightly altered start and end times), from July 6 - 31, 2015.  The program will run out os Sullivan
